Couple buy fire station to convert it into home
White
River Township's oldest fire station will be transformed into a home. The
station at 1086 S. Runyon Road was sold Tuesday to John and Elizabeth Henderson
of Greenwood. They plan to renovate the interior of the two-story station and
eventually move in, White River Township Fire Chief Jeremy Pell said.
The Hendersons beat out another
interested buyer with their bid of $125,125, about $10,000 above Martinsville
resident Mark Mauck's bid. Since the department moved to a new station last
year, the 5,000 square-foot building has been vacant, Pell said.
The Hendersons plan an extensive renovation of the station,
which is an open bay with large lifting doors that once housed five trucks. On
the second floor is living space where firefighters and medics bunked. The
building is zoned residential, according to the county planning department.
Selling the fire station was a good move for both the
township and its residents, Pell said. Now, tax dollars won't be spent to
maintain and insure the building, he said. And the money from the sale will go
back to the township.
